Public Relations Future Forecast 2015

Year in Preview

We’re now halfway through January – yes, 2015 really is here – and everyone is settling back into their regular routine. To inspire us as we take on the new year, I did a little digging to see what the PR community believes 2015 holds for the industry – resolutions, ideas, predictions and unlimited possibilities. So, here it is! The Agency’s Future Forecast, 2015 edition.

  1. The press release is still not going to die

Time and time again we are told that the press release is dead, that nobody is reading them and that this modern age we live in is making the traditional release obsolete. Sure, nobody wants to read a text-heavy format, sent out en masse to reporters who don’t even cover that beat. But in reality, when used correctly the release is still one of the best ways to get your information out. In 2015, look for the release to evolve with more visual content, cleaner formatting and easier access for journalists.

  1. Content will be key (the right kind of content, that is)

“Share information that is interesting and relevant, and, more important, valuable to customers and prospects,” writes Inc.. This message is consistent across the industry – content is important and a great driver to your company and client websites, but it must be of interest to readers and in-line with your goals and objectives. Posts must reflect your expertise and awareness of your industry, and must be engaging and helpful to followers.

It’s also important to note what platforms you share your content on – who is your audience and where are you most likely to engage them? There’s no point utilizing six different platforms if your audience is only present on one!

  1. The industry is going to embrace tech

It’s no secret –we love tech here at The Agency. This month, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas showcased a few things of interest to the PR industry, most notably, wearables and the increasing presence of the Internet of Things. As stated by PR News, “if everyone owns something that has a screen built into it, you’ll want to know how it works.” What better way to reach people who are already glued to their tech? Besides, by now all communications campaigns have a digital component. 2015 is as good a time as ever to resolve to learn how to speak geek!

  1. It’s time to step up security

In 2014, hackers created PR disasters for a number of companies and individuals (remember the iCloud scandal and the Sony Pictures attack?). “Security will be a primary concern in 2015, as more information is collected and used through digital channels,” PR News writes. Yes the digital age makes accessing and sharing information simple and convenient, but it also puts privacy on the line. Make sure to update passwords (never use “qwerty” for a password, we beg you) and back up company and client files. Better safe than sorry!

  1. Coffee… Always coffee…

Last but not least (definitely not least) – coffee will continue to the driving force behind PR pros everywhere, fueling those client meetings and inspiring great ideas. Here at The Agency, we will be taking full advantage of the fancy latte machine located conveniently outside our door…

Well, there you have it. Just a few of the many things to keep an eye on this year! As the public relations world continues to evolve, we can’t wait to see what’s next. Good luck!
